Elroy Hirsch (June 17, 1923 – January 28, 2004) was an American professional football player who became one of the most innovative receivers in NFL history. Born in Wausau, Wisconsin, Hirsch played college football at the University of Wisconsin before joining the Los Angeles Rams in 1946. His combination of speed, athleticism, and intelligence revolutionized the end position and helped establish the modern passing game. During his playing career, Hirsch caught 343 passes for 5,299 yards and 60 touchdowns. He was instrumental in the Rams' 1945 championship season and appeared in multiple Pro Bowls. Known for his creativity on the field and his ability to create separation from defenders, Hirsch earned the nickname 'Crazy Legs' for his elusive running style. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and broadcasting, contributing significantly to football's strategic evolution.
