Ellen MacArthur
Record-breaking solo circumnavigation sailor
Ellen Patricia MacArthur (born July 8, 1976) is a British sailor and businesswoman who achieved legendary status in the sailing world. Born in Derbyshire, England, MacArthur developed her passion for sailing early in life, determined to circumnavigate the world solo. In 2005, at age 28, she completed a solo non-stop circumnavigation in 71 days, 14 hours, and 18 minutes, breaking the previous record by over a week. This extraordinary achievement made her the fastest sailor to complete the journey alone and the second-fastest overall. MacArthur's record-breaking voyage captured global attention and inspired countless people to pursue their dreams. Her humble, determined personality and exceptional sailing skills earned her widespread admiration beyond the sport. After retiring from professional racing in 2009, MacArthur transitioned her focus to environmental advocacy, founding the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2010. The foundation promotes the principles of the circular economy, working to address environmental challenges and foster sustainable business practices. Her influence extends far beyond sailing, establishing her as a role model for perseverance, environmental stewardship, and innovative thinking.

Thinking about the name
Macarthur
Scottish origin
“Derived from Scottish Gaelic 'MacArthur,' meaning 'son of Arthur,' where Arthur traces to ancient Celtic and Brythonic roots possibly meaning 'bear' or 'noble one.' This name carries weight of both Scottish clan tradition and Arthurian legend. Using it as a first name evokes heritage, nobility, and strength.”
