Edmund Hillary
First to summit Mount Everest, mountaineer and philanthropist
Edmund Percival Hillary (July 20, 1919 – January 11, 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist whose ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 made him an international celebrity and symbol of human achievement and perseverance. Born in New Zealand, Hillary developed a passion for climbing through expeditions in the Southern Alps before joining larger mountaineering expeditions. His partnership with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in scaling Mount Everest—the world's highest mountain, which had defeated numerous previous attempts—captured the imagination of the global public. The successful summit on May 29, 1953, coincided with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, making the achievement a moment of national pride for Britain and the Commonwealth. Hillary's subsequent fame allowed him to conduct further expeditions, including leading the New Zealand component of the Commonwealth Transantarctic Expedition, crossing Antarctica in 1958. Beyond mountaineering, Hillary devoted significant energy to philanthropy and humanitarian work, particularly in Nepal where he established schools, hospitals, and health clinics for Sherpa communities. His combination of athletic achievement, genuine humility, and commitment to giving back made him one of the most respected explorers of the 20th century. Hillary remained active in public life well into his later years, embodying the values of courage, compassion, and perseverance that made his name synonymous with the triumph of human determination.
