Edith Schlain 'Edie' Windsor (April 20, 1929 – September 12, 2017) was an American computer programmer, mathematician, and pioneering LGBTQ+ rights activist. Born in Philadelphia and a graduate of Vassar College, Windsor had a distinguished career as a software engineer at IBM during the early days of computing. She met Thea Spyer, her future wife, in 1963, and they had a committed relationship for over 40 years before marrying in Canada in 2007 shortly before Spyer's death. When Windsor was required to pay federal estate taxes on Spyer's inheritance—a burden heterosexual married couples were not subjected to—she challenged the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Her lawsuit, United States v. Windsor, reached the Supreme Court in 2013, resulting in a landmark decision that struck down DOMA's key provision and paved the way for marriage equality nationwide. Windsor's courageous legal action and visible advocacy made her an icon of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. She received numerous accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and her legacy continues to inspire civil rights advocacy worldwide.
