Edgar Lee Masters

Edgar Lee Masters (1868–1950) was an American poet, novelist, and playwright who achieved lasting literary fame through his groundbreaking work 'Spoon River Anthology' (1915). Born in rural Kansas and raised in Illinois, Masters trained as a lawyer and practiced law in Chicago while simultaneously pursuing his literary ambitions. 'Spoon River Anthology' revolutionized American poetry by presenting over 240 interconnected monologues, each narrated by a deceased resident of a fictional small town, creating a collective portrait of American provincial life, human desires, failures, and dreams.
