Dylan Roof
Charleston church shooting (2015), hate crime, domestic terrorism
Dylann Storm Roof (born April 3, 1994) is an American domestic terrorist responsible for one of the deadliest hate crimes in recent American history. On June 17, 2015, Roof entered Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and opened fire during a Wednesday evening Bible study session, killing nine people, all African American. His victims included prominent community figures such as Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a state senator. Roof's motivation was explicitly racial, driven by white supremacist ideology and hatred. After fleeing the scene, he was apprehended two days later. His trial and subsequent conviction for murder and federal hate crimes resulted in a death sentence. Roof's actions sparked national conversations about gun violence, domestic terrorism, and racism in America. The shooting renewed debates about Confederate symbolism, leading to the removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina's Capitol grounds. This crime represents a stark example of the devastating impact of racial hatred and domestic terrorism in contemporary America. While this entry may seem inappropriate for a baby naming resource, it is historically significant as a tragic reminder of how names can become associated with violent crimes.

Thinking about the name
Dylan
Welsh origin
“Derived from Welsh elements meaning 'son of the sea,' Dylan carries poetic and artistic associations from its use by the legendary Welsh figure Dylan ap Gu Gwynedd. The name gained modern prominence through Bob Dylan, who chose it as his stage name in homage to the Welsh tradition. Dylan balances classic mythological roots with contemporary cool, making it perpetually appealing.”
