Dwayne Haskins
NFL quarterback, 2nd overall pick 2019, Ohio State standout
Dwayne Haskins Jr. (July 3, 1997 – April 9, 2022) was an American professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League. After a standout college career at Ohio State University, Haskins was selected second overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders (then known as the Washington Football Team). He showed promise early in his career but faced inconsistency and competition for playing time. Haskins also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and other teams during his brief NFL tenure. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was struck by a dump truck on a Florida highway in April 2022, at just 24 years old. Despite the brevity of his professional career, Haskins' potential and the circumstances of his death had significant impact on discussions about player safety and mental health in professional sports. His memory is honored by Ohio State and the NFL communities.

Thinking about the name
Dwayne
American origin
“An American respelling of the Irish name Duane, meaning 'dark,' Dwayne emerged in the late 20th century as a creative modern variant. Most famously borne by NBA icon Dwyane Wade, the name has become iconic in contemporary American culture. It combines Irish heritage with modern innovation, striking a balance between distinctive and approachable.”
