Dorothy Day (November 8, 1897 – November 29, 1980) was an American journalist, social activist, and Catholic convert who became one of the most influential social justice figures of the 20th century. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she initially pursued a career in journalism and lived an unconventional bohemian lifestyle in 1920s New York City. After a transformative spiritual awakening and conversion to Catholicism in 1927, Day dedicated her life to serving the poor and marginalized. In 1933, she co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement with Peter Maurin, which established hospitality houses, published an influential newspaper, and promoted a radical interpretation of Catholic social teaching. Day's approach combined direct service to the homeless and hungry with prophetic social criticism and nonviolent resistance to war and injustice. She was arrested multiple times for civil disobedience and remained a vocal opponent of war throughout her life. Her autobiography and essays reveal a complex figure who grappled with faith, doubt, motherhood, and commitment to the poor. Day's legacy influenced multiple generations of activists, theologians, and religious communities. She was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2019, recognizing her spiritual significance and contributions to social justice.
