Dorothea E. Orem (July 15, 1914 – June 22, 2007) was an American nurse theorist and educator whose Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory revolutionized nursing science and education. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Orem earned her nursing degree from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing and later pursued advanced degrees, establishing herself as a leading intellectual voice in nursing. Her theory, first published in 1971 and refined through subsequent editions, proposed that nursing's goal is to help individuals meet their own self-care needs and achieve independence. This framework shifted nursing from a task-oriented discipline to a patient-centered profession focused on empowerment and autonomy. Orem served in various nursing positions, including at the University of Missouri, where she developed and refined her theory. Her work earned her international recognition, and her theory became one of the most widely taught nursing models globally. Orem received numerous honors, including election to the American Academy of Nursing and the Founders Award. Her intellectual contributions transformed how nurses are trained and how nursing care is conceptualized, making her one of the most influential nursing theorists of the 20th century.
