Doretha Dix (1802-1887) was an American social reformer and activist whose tireless advocacy fundamentally transformed the American approach to mental health care and prison reform. Born in Hampden, Maine, Dix experienced a difficult childhood marked by family instability, which informed her later compassion for the vulnerable and marginalized. Beginning her career as a teacher and writer, she pivoted to activism after visiting a Massachusetts jail in 1841, where she discovered mentally ill individuals held in deplorable conditions.
