Donny Hathaway
Soul/R&B singer, 'This Christmas,' duets with Roberta Flack
Donny Hathaway (1945-1979) was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and producer whose emotionally rich voice and sophisticated musical arrangements left an indelible mark on soul music. Born in Chicago and raised in St. Louis, Hathaway developed his musical talents through gospel music and formal training before moving to New York to pursue a recording career. He achieved significant commercial and critical success with his warm, expressive baritone voice, creating iconic duets with Roberta Flack including 'Where Is the Love' and 'The Closer I Get to You,' which became signature soul collaborations. His solo work, including the Christmas standard 'This Christmas' and 'Extension of a Man,' showcased his abilities as a vocalist, arranger, and producer. Hathaway's music bridged soul, R&B, and pop sensibilities while maintaining deep roots in African American musical traditions. Tragically, his career was cut short when he died at age 33, but his influence on soul music remained profound. Artists have continued to sample and cover his work, and he is remembered as one of the great soul singers of the 1970s.
