Donald Rumsfeld
Secretary of Defense, Iraq War architect, political strategist
Donald Henry Rumsfeld (July 9, 1932 – June 29, 2023) was an American politician, businessman, and diplomat who held some of the highest positions in the U.S. government across multiple administrations. Born in Chicago, Rumsfeld had a naval aviation background before entering politics. He served as U.S. Congressman from Illinois (1963-1969), Ambassador to NATO, and Chief of Staff to President Gerald Ford. Rumsfeld is most remembered for his two tenures as Secretary of Defense—under President Ford (1975-1977) and President George W. Bush (2001-2006). During his second tenure, he was instrumental in planning and executing the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq following the September 11 terrorist attacks. His management philosophy, emphasizing "transformation" of military structures and efficiency, influenced military policy significantly. Rumsfeld was known for his direct communication style and notable aphorisms, including "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns." His tenure remained controversial, particularly regarding the justification and conduct of the Iraq War, the treatment of detainees, and intelligence assessments. After leaving office, he wrote memoir and remained a public intellectual and commentator. Despite controversy, Rumsfeld's influence on defense policy and military strategy in the early 21st century remains substantial and continues to be debated by historians and policymakers.

Irish origin
“Derived from the Gaelic Domhnall, meaning 'world ruler' or 'brown-haired,' Donald traveled from medieval Scotland and Ireland into widespread use across the English-speaking world. The name gained prominence through Scottish royalty and became a symbol of leadership and authority. It remains timeless, balancing formality with approachability.”
