Dmitri Medvedev

President of Russia (2008-2012), Prime Minister (2012-2020)

Biography

Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev (born September 14, 1965) is a prominent Russian politician and current Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council. Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Medvedev studied law and began his political career in St. Petersburg city administration in the 1990s, where he worked alongside Vladimir Putin. Following Putin's election as President in 2000, Medvedev rose through the ranks, serving as Chief of Presidential Staff and First Deputy Prime Minister. In 2008, due to constitutional term limits, Putin stepped aside and Medvedev became President while Putin became Prime Minister, with many observers viewing this as a power rotation between allies. During his presidency, Medvedev took a somewhat more liberal public stance on certain issues compared to Putin, though ultimate authority remained contested. After his presidency ended in 2012, he served as Prime Minister until 2020. Throughout his career, Medvedev has been known for his tech-savvy approach and social media presence, unusual for Russian politics. His political fortunes have been closely tied to his relationship with Putin, making him one of the most influential figures in contemporary Russian governance.
