Denis Potvin (born October 29, 1953) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and one of the sport's greatest defensemen. Born in Ottawa, Potvin was drafted first overall by the New York Islanders in 1973 and became the cornerstone of their dynasty. He was a dominant force on defense, known for his exceptional skating, hockey intelligence, and leadership. Potvin earned eight consecutive All-Star selections and won the Norris Trophy three times as the league's best defenseman. His number 5 was retired by the Islanders, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. Beyond his on-ice accomplishments, Potvin's leadership helped establish the Islanders' winning culture and team identity. His influence on defensive play and his role in one of sports' greatest dynasties cement his legacy as a transformative figure in ice hockey history.

Thinking about the name
Denis
Latin origin
“Derived from the Latin Dionysius, honoring the Greek god of wine, theater, and ecstasy. Denis became a saint's name through St. Denis, the patron saint of France, giving it deep Christian and European royal significance. The name balances classical sophistication with approachable warmth, popular across European cultures for centuries.”
