Deborah Sampson

Deborah Sampson (December 17, 1760 – April 22, 1827) was an American woman who disguised herself as a man to serve as a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, making her one of the most notable figures in women's military history. Born in Massachusetts to a poor family, Sampson worked as an indentured servant before the Revolution. In 1782, under the assumed male identity of Robert Shurtlief, she enlisted in the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment and served for approximately 17 months without her female identity being discovered. She participated in numerous military engagements and demonstrated courage and competence as a soldier. When she developed an illness and sought treatment, her biological sex was discovered, leading to her discharge. After the war, Sampson struggled for recognition and financial support until she wrote 'The Female Review,' a memoir of her military service published in 1797, which brought her some notoriety. She began giving public lectures about her experiences, becoming one of the first American women to lecture publicly. In 1818, Congress granted her a military pension of $20 per month, recognizing her service and sacrifice. Sampson's story has become legendary in American history, representing female courage, determination, and the contributions of women to national independence. Her life challenges traditional gender roles and demonstrates the historical presence of women in military service, predating modern discussions of gender in the military.
