Dashiell Hammett

Samuel Dashiell Hammett (May 27, 1894 – January 10, 1961) was an American author and screenwriter who fundamentally shaped the hard-boiled detective fiction genre. Born in Maryland, Hammett worked as a Pinkerton detective before turning to writing, an experience that lent authenticity to his novels. He created the character Sam Spade, the iconic private detective featured in "The Maltese Falcon" (1930), which became one of the most influential detective novels ever written. His other major works include "The Big Sleep" and "The Thin Man," the latter introducing the famous husband-and-wife detective team Nick and Nora Charles. Hammett's terse, muscular prose style and morally ambiguous characters represented a radical departure from earlier mystery fiction, establishing conventions that remain dominant in crime literature today. His later life was marked by political activism and struggles with alcoholism, but his literary legacy endures as foundational to American noir fiction and detective storytelling.
