Daron Malakian
Guitarist and vocalist of System of a Down
Daron Vartan Malakian (born June 18, 1975) is an Armenian-American musician, guitarist, and vocalist best known as the co-founder and primary creative force behind the Grammy-nominated heavy metal band System of a Down. Born in Hollywood, California, to Armenian immigrant parents, Malakian developed a passion for music early and went on to form System of a Down in 1994 with Shavo Odadjian. The band achieved commercial success with their self-titled 1998 debut album and massive international popularity following the release of 'Toxicity' (2001), which showcased Malakian's distinctive songwriting style blending heavy, dissonant guitars with melodic vocals and deeply political lyrical content. Malakian's compositions often addressed social injustice, political corruption, and Armenian historical experiences, making System of a Down one of the few major rock bands to consistently incorporate non-Western cultural elements and activism into mainstream music. Beyond System of a Down, Malakian pursued a solo career with his band Scars on Broadway, releasing albums that further explored his musical and political interests. His musical style is characterized by unconventional song structures, heavy riffs, and a willingness to experiment with diverse musical influences. Malakian has been vocal about Armenian rights and genocide recognition, using his platform to raise awareness. His contributions to modern rock music have earned numerous accolades and a devoted international fanbase. Malakian continues to record, perform, and advocate for causes important to him, maintaining his role as one of contemporary rock's most distinctive and politically engaged artists.
