Cyrus McCormick

Cyrus Hall McCormick (1809–1884) was an American inventor, manufacturer, and businessman whose mechanical reaper transformed agricultural production and industrial manufacturing in the United States. Born in Virginia to a farming family, McCormick inherited his father's experimental work on harvesting machines and successfully developed the first practical mechanical reaper in 1831. The invention dramatically increased harvesting efficiency, allowing farmers to harvest grain far more quickly and with less labor than hand methods. Recognizing the commercial potential, McCormick relocated to Chicago and established the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, which became one of the largest farm equipment manufacturers in the world. His factory pioneered mass production techniques and innovations in labor organization that influenced American manufacturing practices. McCormick built a manufacturing empire while also engaging in philanthropic work, particularly supporting theological education.
