Cristóbal Balenciaga

Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) was a Spanish Basque fashion designer and founder of the Balenciaga luxury fashion house, considered one of the most influential couturiers of the 20th century. Born in Getaria, Spain, Balenciaga learned tailoring from his mother and opened his first boutique in San Sebastián in 1917, later establishing himself in Madrid and Barcelona before moving to Paris in 1937. His designs were characterized by architectural precision, innovative silhouettes, and impeccable craftsmanship. Balenciaga pioneered the tunic dress, the semi-fitted coat, and the balloon skirt, earning him the respect of fellow designers including Christian Dior. During his career, he dressed Spanish and European nobility, Hollywood stars, and international society women. The designer was known for his perfectionism and refusal to compromise on quality, often destroying garments that didn't meet his exacting standards. He retired from fashion in 1968 but left a lasting legacy that continues to influence contemporary fashion. The Balenciaga house, acquired by Kering in 2001, remains one of the world's most prestigious fashion brands, and Balenciaga is revered as a master of couture construction.
