Conrad Veidt

Actor in 'Casablanca' (1942), German and Hollywood cinema

Biography

Hans Walter Conrad Veidt (January 22, 1893 – April 3, 1943) was a German-American actor who became famous for his dramatic intensity and distinctive screen presence. Born in Berlin, Veidt began his career in German cinema during the silent film era, becoming one of Germany's most accomplished actors. He appeared in the classic German expressionist film 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' (1920) and other notable German productions before emigrating to Hollywood in the 1930s to escape the Nazi regime. In Hollywood, Veidt became known for playing complex villains and dramatic characters, most memorably as Major Strasser in 'Casablanca' (1942), one of cinema's most iconic roles. Despite his villainous screen presence, Veidt was personally committed to opposing Nazi ideology and used his position to support anti-Nazi causes. His career was cut short when he died of a heart attack in 1943 at age 50, just as 'Casablanca' was bringing him international recognition. Veidt's legacy endures through his influential performances in both German and American cinema, and his 'Casablanca' role remains one of cinema's most memorable antagonists.
