Cole Porter
Broadway composer, 'Night and Day,' musical theater standards
Cole Porter (June 9, 1891 – December 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter who became one of the most influential figures in musical theater and popular music of the 20th century. Born into a wealthy Indiana family, Porter studied music at Yale University and later in Paris, where he developed his distinctive style blending jazz influences with classical sophistication. He composed music for numerous Broadway musicals including 'Anything Goes,' 'Kiss Me Kate,' and 'Can-Can,' creating timeless standards such as 'Night and Day,' 'Begin the Beguine,' and 'I've Got You Under My Skin.' Porter's lyrics were known for their witty wordplay, clever rhyme schemes, and sophisticated humor, often pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable in mainstream entertainment. Despite suffering a near-fatal horseback riding accident in 1937 that left him in chronic pain, Porter continued composing prolifically throughout his life. His music has been performed countless times and remains a staple of jazz standards and Broadway repertoire, influencing generations of composers and establishing a gold standard for American musical theater composition.

Thinking about the name
Porter
English origin
“Originally an occupational surname meaning 'gatekeeper' or 'one who carries,' Porter evokes both strength and service. The name gained traction as a given name in the 20th century, particularly in English-speaking cultures, and carries a sophisticated, preppy sensibility while remaining grounded and approachable. It has a literary quality—think Porter Robinson or Porter Wagoner—that feels both vintage and contemporary.”
