Clementina Sobieska

Clementina Maria Sobieska (1702–1735) was a Polish noblewoman of the House of Sobieska, famous for her role in Jacobite history as the wife of James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender and exiled Stuart claimant to the British throne. Born into one of Europe's most distinguished noble families—her grandfather was King John III Sobieski of Poland—Clementina married the Stuart prince in 1719, a union that united two major Catholic European dynasties. She was the mother of Charles Edward Stuart, known to history as Bonnie Prince Charlie, who would lead the final Jacobite rising in 1745. Living in exile primarily in Rome, Clementina became an important figure in Jacobite circles, representing the legitimacy and continuity of the Stuart cause during their long period of dispossession. Her marriage strengthened European support for Jacobite restoration efforts, and her sons' births were celebrated as symbolic victories by Stuart loyalists. Though she died relatively young at thirty-three, Clementina's legacy endured through her sons and her representation of the intersection between Polish nobility and the troubled fortunes of the House of Stuart.
