Claude Shannon

Claude Elwood Shannon (April 30, 1916 – February 24, 2001) was an American mathematician, electrical engineer, and cryptographer who is widely recognized as the father of information theory. Born in Petoskey, Michigan, Shannon studied mathematics and electrical engineering at the University of Michigan before earning his doctorate from MIT. His Master's thesis on the use of Boolean algebra in electrical circuits laid groundwork for digital computing. During World War II, Shannon worked on cryptanalysis and secure communications, developing theories that would underpin modern encryption. His most significant contribution was the 1948 publication of 'A Mathematical Theory of Communication,' which established information theory—a discipline fundamental to telecommunications, data compression, and digital technology. This work introduced the concept of the 'bit' (binary digit) and quantified information in mathematical terms, transforming how we understand communication, storage, and transmission of data. Shannon's theories became the foundation for all modern digital communications, internet technology, and data science. Beyond his formal research, Shannon was known for his creative thinking and unconventional approach to problems. He worked at Bell Labs for decades, influencing generations of engineers and scientists. His legacy extends far beyond academia; the mathematical frameworks he established underpin virtually all modern technology and continue to shape research in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and beyond.
