Claude Monet

Claude Oscar Monet (November 14, 1840 – December 5, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter whose innovative approach to capturing light, color, and atmospheric effects fundamentally transformed modern art. Born in Paris and raised in Le Havre, Monet developed an intense interest in light's effects on landscape from an early age. He became a pioneering figure of Impressionism, a movement that emerged in the 1870s, emphasizing direct observation of nature and the play of light rather than adherence to traditional academic conventions. His 1872 painting 'Impression, Sunrise'—depicting the harbor at Le Havre—sparked the term 'Impressionism' when critics used it derisively. Rather than painting in a studio from memory, Monet worked en plein air (outdoors), often returning to the same subjects under different lighting conditions to explore how perception changes with light and time. His famous series paintings—including water lilies, haystacks, and Rouen Cathedral—exemplify this methodology, with each variation revealing subtle shifts in color and atmosphere. In his later years, Monet established a garden at Giverny, which became a living laboratory and artistic obsession. His water lily paintings from this period feature increasingly abstract compositions of color and reflection, presaging abstract expressionism.
