Clara Barton

Founder of the American Red Cross; Civil War nurse

Biography

Clarissa Harlowe Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912), known as Clara Barton, was an American nurse, civil rights advocate, and founder of the American Red Cross. Born in Massachusetts, Barton initially worked as a teacher but found her true calling in nursing and humanitarian work. During the American Civil War, she earned the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield" for her courageous work treating wounded soldiers on the front lines, often at great personal risk. After the war, she traveled to Europe where she witnessed the work of the International Red Cross and became inspired to establish an American branch. In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross, serving as its president for 23 years and expanding its mission beyond battlefield care to include disaster relief, first aid training, and blood donation services. Barton was a pioneer in professionalizing nursing and establishing standards for humanitarian aid. Her work during natural disasters and conflicts set the template for modern disaster relief. She remained active well into her 80s, and her legacy continues through the Red Cross organization, which operates in nearly every country worldwide. Barton's dedication to alleviating human suffering revolutionized humanitarian aid.
