Biography

Christopher Mathewson (August 12, 1880 – October 13, 1925) was an American professional baseball pitcher widely regarded as one of the greatest pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball. Playing primarily for the New York Giants from 1900 to 1916, Mathewson became the face of early 20th century baseball, famous for his exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and intellectual approach to the game. He won 373 games during his career, third all-time, and was the first pitcher to win 30 games in a season in the modern era, accomplishing this feat four times. Known for his gentlemanly demeanor and moral character, Mathewson became an icon of the sport during baseball's early era, helping establish its legitimacy as America's national pastime.
