Christopher Columbus
Explorer, first European expedition to the Americas (1492)
Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was a Genoese explorer whose 1492 voyage across the Atlantic Ocean marked a transformative moment in world history. Commissioned by the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, Columbus led three ships—the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María—in search of a westward route to Asia. Instead, he reached the Caribbean islands, initiating sustained European contact with the Americas. Though not the first European to reach the continents (Norse explorers had preceded him), Columbus's voyage catalyzed the Age of Exploration and opened the floodgates for European colonization. His legacy is complex and contested: while celebrated as a bold navigator whose discoveries reshaped global geography and commerce, he is also remembered for the exploitation and enslavement of indigenous peoples he encountered. Columbus died in relative obscurity, never fully realizing the magnitude of his impact on world history.

“An alternative spelling of Christopher that simplifies the traditional double-p, maintaining the Greek 'Christophoros' meaning of 'bearer of Christ.' This variant offers a streamlined aesthetic while preserving classical heritage.”
