Chick Hearn (November 27, 1916 – August 5, 2002) was an American sports broadcaster who became the voice of basketball and one of the most influential figures in sports broadcasting history. Born Francis Dayle Hearn, he began his career in radio before joining the Los Angeles Lakers broadcast booth in 1961, where he remained for over 40 years. Hearn revolutionized basketball commentary with his rapid-fire delivery, encyclopedic knowledge of the game, and innovative vocabulary that introduced terms like "slam dunk" and "air ball" into popular usage. His enthusiastic and colorful play-by-play style made Lakers games must-listen events and helped popularize basketball during its growth period. Hearn was present for some of the greatest moments in NBA history, including multiple championships and legendary performances by players like Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He won the Peabody Award and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His influence on sports broadcasting extended far beyond basketball, and he is widely credited with establishing many of the conventions used by modern announcers.
