Chasity Bono
Musician, actor, and LGBTQ+ activist; transgender pioneer in public life
Chastity Bono (born March 4, 1969) is an American musician, actor, writer, and transgender activist who gained early prominence as the child of entertainment icons Cher and Sonny Bono. Born Chastity Sun Bono, they performed with their parents on the variety show 'The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour' as a child performer and later pursued an independent career in music and acting. Chastity came out as transgender in 2009 and transitioned, becoming known as Chaz Bono and later reclaiming variations of their birth name. As a public figure, Chaz has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and transgender visibility, appearing in documentaries, writing memoirs, and speaking publicly about identity and acceptance. Their willingness to share their personal journey during a time when public understanding of transgender issues was limited helped educate millions and provided visibility to transgender experiences. Chaz has also remained engaged in creative pursuits, including music production and entertainment work. Their legacy centers on authenticity, courage in self-expression, and using a platform of privilege to advocate for marginalized communities.
