Biography

Chas Chandler (December 18, 1938 – July 17, 1996) was a British musician, producer, and manager who played a crucial role in 1960s rock music history. Born Chad Louis Chandler, he first gained fame as the bass guitarist for the Newcastle-based rock band The Animals, performing on their hit 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place.' More significantly, Chandler is remembered as the man who discovered Jimi Hendrix in New York City in 1966 and brought him to London, where Hendrix's career exploded. Chandler managed Hendrix during his formative years in England, connecting him with guitarist Mitch Mitchell and drummer John Mitchell Paul, and helped produce Hendrix's landmark debut album 'Are You Experienced.' Beyond Hendrix, Chandler discovered and managed other notable acts including Slade, proving his keen ear for talent. After leaving the music business, he became involved in horse racing and farming. Chandler's legacy rests primarily on his role in introducing Jimi Hendrix to the world stage, fundamentally shaping the trajectory of rock music and helping establish the psychedelic sound of the late 1960s.
