Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist, biologist, and geologist whose scientific insights fundamentally transformed our understanding of life on Earth. Born into a wealthy Shrewsbury family with a tradition of intellectual achievement, Darwin studied theology and natural history at Cambridge University before embarking on a five-year voyage aboard HMS Beagle in 1831. During this transformative voyage, he visited the Galápagos Islands and other regions, observing species variation and geological formations that would inform his groundbreaking theories. After returning to England, Darwin spent decades developing his theory of evolution by natural selection, which he finally published in On the Origin of Species in 1859.
