Chancy Depew

Chancy Mitchell Depew (1834–1928) was an American lawyer, orator, and politician who played a significant role in late 19th-century American politics. Born in Peekskill, New York, Depew became one of the most celebrated public speakers of his era, known for his wit, eloquence, and command of political rhetoric. He served as U.S. Senator from New York from 1899 to 1911 and was a dominant figure in New York Republican politics for decades. Beyond politics, Depew was a successful railroad executive and corporate lawyer, serving as counsel and later president of the New York Central Railroad. His political career was marked by his advocacy for American industrial expansion and his defense of conservative Republican policies. Though his reputation was later tarnished by scandals related to railroad monopolies and corporate influence, Depew remained a notable figure in the Gilded Age, representing the intersection of business, law, and politics that defined that era.
