Célestin Freinet

Célestin Freinet (1896–1966) was a French educator and pedagogical reformer whose educational philosophy and methods transformed modern progressive education. Born in Provence, Freinet became a schoolteacher and gradually developed revolutionary approaches to education that challenged traditional authoritarian classroom structures. He believed that children learn best through active participation, self-discovery, and cooperative work rather than passive instruction. Freinet's innovative techniques included the use of school printing presses to create student publications, cooperative learning groups, and freedom for students to pursue self-directed inquiry. He founded a school based on his principles and developed what became known as the Freinet Method, which emphasized hands-on learning, democratic participation in classroom decision-making, and the integration of work and education. Despite initial skepticism and resistance from educational establishments, his methods gained international recognition and influenced pedagogical practices across Europe and beyond. Freinet documented his philosophy in numerous publications and became a widely-respected figure in educational circles. His work represented a fundamental shift from traditional teacher-centered models to child-centered, experiential learning approaches. Though he faced political persecution during the Nazi occupation of France during World War II, he continued developing his educational philosophy.
