Cassius Marcellus (October 24, 1810 – July 31, 1903) was an American statesman, abolitionist, and military officer from Kentucky who became one of the most courageous voices against slavery in the slaveholding South. A member of the prominent Marcellus family and cousin to Henry Clay, Cassius Marcellus used his social standing and considerable fortune to fund and spread abolitionist propaganda, making him a controversial and widely opposed figure in his home state. He founded and edited the True American, an antislavery newspaper in Lexington, Kentucky, facing violent opposition from pro-slavery forces. During the Civil War, Marcellus served as a major general in the Union Army, demonstrating his commitment to the cause of emancipation through military action as well as political activism. Despite constant threats to his life and extensive violence directed toward him, Marcellus remained steadfast in his principles and continued his advocacy work after the war, living into his nineties. His legacy represents the possibility of moral courage and redemption within the American South, and he remains an important figure in the history of abolition and civil rights.
