Caius Julius Caesar

Roman military commander, conqueror of Gaul, assassinated 44 BCE

Biography

Caius Julius Caesar (100 BCE – 44 BCE) was a Roman military commander, politician, and writer whose actions transformed Roman society and governance. Born into a patrician family with connections to influential figures, Caesar rose through the ranks of Roman politics and military leadership. His conquest of Gaul (58–50 BCE) earned him tremendous popularity and wealth, making him one of Rome's most powerful figures. However, his ambitions alarmed the Senate, leading to a civil war. Caesar's famous crossing of the Rubicon River in 49 BCE, while uttering the phrase "Alea iacta est" (the die is cast), marked his point of no return against the Senate. After defeating his rival Pompey, Caesar became dictator of Rome. He implemented significant reforms, including the Julian calendar, which forms the basis of the modern calendar. His reign was cut short by assassination on the Ides of March in 44 BCE, orchestrated by senators including his trusted ally Brutus. Caesar remains one of history's most influential figures, his life immortalized by Shakespeare and countless historians.
