Bulah Jackson

Bulah Jackson (1920–1982) was a pioneering African American civil rights figure who made history by becoming the first Black resident of Levittown, Pennsylvania, in 1954. Born in Maryland, Jackson faced the systemic racial discrimination that defined mid-20th century America, particularly in housing. When she and her family attempted to purchase a home in the newly built Levittown community—a symbol of postwar American suburban prosperity—they were met with fierce resistance from white residents and local authorities. Despite hostile reactions including threats and vandalism, Jackson and her family maintained their home in Levittown, demonstrating extraordinary courage and resolve. Her act of simply living in her purchased home became an important symbolic and practical blow against residential segregation. This action predated the Fair Housing Act of 1968 by fourteen years, making Jackson's stand an important earlier chapter in the long struggle for housing equality. While her name is less famous than other civil rights icons, her contribution to breaking down racial barriers in American residential life was significant and has been recognized by historians and civil rights scholars as an important example of everyday courage in the face of systemic racism.
