Biography

William Henry Abbott (October 2, 1897 – April 24, 1974), professionally known as Bud Abbott, was an American comedian, actor, and producer who achieved tremendous success as half of the comedy duo Abbott and Costello. Born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Abbott entered the entertainment industry as a young man and formed his partnership with Lou Costello in 1936, launching a collaboration that would define American comedy for decades. The duo became famous for their rapid-fire comedic timing, physical comedy, and brilliantly constructed comic routines. Their most celebrated routine, 'Who's on First?', a complex wordplay sketch involving baseball players with unusual names, is considered one of the greatest comedy routines ever created and remains widely performed and referenced in popular culture. Abbott and Costello achieved success across multiple media, including radio, film, television, and live performance, becoming major stars during the Golden Age of Hollywood. They appeared in numerous films throughout the 1940s and 1950s, many of which combined comedy with horror or adventure elements. Beyond their most famous routine, Abbott and Costello created an extensive repertoire of comic material and helped establish many conventions of American comedy.
