Buck Weaver

Black Sox scandal, Chicago White Sox shortstop, 1917 World Series

Biography

George Daniel 'Buck' Weaver (1890-1956) was an American professional baseball player who played as a shortstop and third baseman, primarily for the Chicago White Sox from 1912 to 1920. Known for his defensive prowess and batting ability, Weaver was considered one of the best fielding shortstops of his era and helped the White Sox win the 1917 World Series. However, his baseball legacy was forever tainted by his involvement in the Black Sox scandal of 1919, when eight White Sox players, including Weaver, conspired to throw the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Despite claiming he didn't participate in the actual game-fixing, Weaver was banned from baseball for life by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis in 1921, alongside the other implicated players. Weaver maintained his innocence regarding his actual playing involvement throughout his life, and historical debate has centered on whether he deserved the lifetime ban. The scandal became one of the most infamous moments in sports history, symbolizing the corruption that threatened the integrity of baseball during the early 20th century. Weaver's case remains a subject of historical and ethical discussion regarding proportional punishment and redemption in sports.
