Bob Gibson

Robert Gilchrist Gibson (born November 9, 1935) is an American former professional baseball pitcher widely considered one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Gibson signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1958 and remained with the organization throughout his 17-year career (1959-1975). Known for his intense competitiveness, fierce demeanor on the mound, and exceptional control, Gibson became a Cardinals icon and a dominant force in National League baseball during the 1960s and early 1970s. His crowning achievement came in 1968, widely called the 'Year of the Pitcher,' when Gibson posted a remarkable 1.12 earned run average (ERA)—the lowest single-season ERA in the modern era—over 304.2 innings pitched. He won 251 games, struck out 3,117 batters, and led the Cardinals to World Series victories in 1964 and 1967. A seven-time All-Star, Gibson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 in his first year of eligibility.
