Beulah Parker

Beulah Parker (October 17, 1915 – August 22, 1952) was a pioneering African American actress and radio performer who achieved significant success during the golden age of radio. She was born Ethel Parker in St. Louis, Missouri, and adopted the stage name 'Beulah' for her career. Parker gained prominence in the 1940s as the voice of the character Beulah on the popular radio show 'Beulah,' a domestic comedy that ran from 1945 to 1953. The show was groundbreaking as it featured a Black woman as the central character and headliner, making it one of the first series of its kind. When the show transitioned to television in 1950, Parker continued in the role, appearing on the small screen alongside white actors in a lead capacity—a significant achievement during the era of segregation and racial tension. Though her time in the spotlight was cut short due to her death from a stroke at age 36, Parker's pioneering work helped open doors for Black performers in mainstream American entertainment.
