Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot (January 14, 1841 – March 2, 1895) was a French Impressionist painter and one of the most significant female artists of the 19th century. Born into an upper-class family with a strong appreciation for the arts, she received formal art training and became a professional painter at a time when few women could pursue such careers. Morisot was a founding member of the Impressionist movement and participated in seven of their eight exhibitions, making her one of the core figures of the movement. Her work is characterized by loose brushwork, attention to light and color, and intimate domestic scenes, often depicting women and children in everyday settings. She married Eugène Manet, the brother of Édouard Manet, and moved in influential artistic circles. Unlike many of her male contemporaries, Morisot faced significant social constraints as a woman artist, yet she persisted in developing her unique style. Her paintings are known for their delicate handling of light, subtle compositions, and psychological depth.
