Bertha von Suttner

Bertha Felicitas Sophie Freifrau von Suttner (June 9, 1843 – June 30, 1914) was an Austrian writer and peace activist who became a pioneering figure in the international peace movement. Born into Austro-Hungarian aristocracy, von Suttner initially pursued music and acting before turning to writing. Her most famous work, "Die Waffen nieder!" ("Lay Down Your Arms!", 1889), was a groundbreaking novel that depicted the horrors of war through the eyes of a woman, challenging prevailing militaristic attitudes of the era. The novel became an international bestseller and established her as a leading voice for peace. Von Suttner was instrumental in founding the Austrian Peace Society and became a frequent speaker at international peace conferences, advocating for disarmament and international arbitration to resolve conflicts. She corresponded extensively with Alfred Nobel and influenced his thinking about peace, likely contributing to the establishment of the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1914, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first woman to win it—a recognition of her decades of tireless advocacy. Her award citation recognized her literary work and leadership in the peace movement. Though she died just months before the outbreak of World War I, which would contradict everything she worked for, von Suttner's legacy endured as a pioneer of feminist pacifism and international cooperation.
