Benigno Aquino III
15th Philippine President, anti-corruption advocate, economic reformer
Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III (1960–2021), popularly known as Noynoy Aquino, was the 15th President of the Philippines from 2010 to 2016. Born into the prominent Aquino political family, with his father being the martyred democracy advocate Benigno Aquino Jr., Noynoy carried tremendous expectations as he inherited his family's legacy of public service. He served as a congressman and senator before his election to the presidency, positioning himself as an anti-corruption candidate in a nation plagued by graft and institutional inefficiency. During his six-year term, Aquino prioritized transparent governance, implemented the Conditional Cash Transfer program to reduce poverty, and oversaw significant economic growth, earning the Philippines recognition as one of Asia's fastest-growing economies. His administration also pursued infrastructure development and strengthened international relationships, particularly with the United States and neighboring Asian nations. Though his presidency was marked by both achievements and controversies, including his handling of the Mamasapano massacre, Aquino maintained high public approval ratings for much of his tenure. After leaving office, he remained a political figure until his death in 2021, maintaining his family's presence in Philippine political discourse.
