Beatrice Wood

Beatrice Wood (March 3, 1893 – March 12, 1998) was an American artist, ceramicist, painter, and pioneering member of the Dada art movement who became one of the 20th century's most prolific and long-lived artists. Born in San Francisco, Wood was initially drawn to theater and dance before discovering visual art in her twenties. She became involved with the Dada movement in New York during World War I, collaborating with Marcel Duchamp and other avant-garde artists, earning the affectionate nickname 'Mama of Dada' for her exuberant spirit and creative energy. Despite her early prominence in the art world, Wood moved to California in the 1930s where she began her serious engagement with ceramics, a medium she would pursue with extraordinary dedication for over 70 years. Her ceramic work combined technical mastery with playful experimentation, creating distinctive vessels and sculptural forms that blended Eastern and Western influences. Wood was also an accomplished painter and had a lifelong interest in spiritual pursuits, becoming a follower of Indian philosophy. She maintained an active studio practice, continued creating and exhibiting well into her 100s, and became a beloved elder figure in the American art world. Wood's exceptional longevity, creative vitality, and joyful approach to art-making made her an inspiration to generations of artists.
