Bea Arthur

Bernice Frankel (May 13, 1922 – April 25, 2009), professionally known as Bea Arthur, was an American actress and comedian who became an iconic figure in television history through her groundbreaking roles in sitcoms that tackled social issues and redefined television comedy. Born in New York City, Arthur began her career in theater and eventually transitioned to television, where she achieved her greatest fame. She is best remembered for her role as Edith Bunker's cousin Maude Findlay in 'All in the Family' (1971-1979), a character so popular that it spawned the spin-off series 'Maude' (1972-1978), which she headlined. In 'Maude,' Arthur's character was a liberal, outspoken feminist who tackled controversial topics including abortion, racism, and women's rights—groundbreaking content for network television.
