Ayub Khan

Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan (May 14, 1907 – April 14, 1974) was a Pakistani military officer who served as the second President of Pakistan from 1958 to 1969. Born in Rehana in what is now Pakistan, Ayub attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and had a distinguished military career before assuming the presidency through a coup d'état. His period of rule, known as the 'First Martial Law,' was characterized by significant institutional and administrative reforms. Ayub implemented the 'Green Revolution' in agriculture, which substantially increased Pakistan's food production through the adoption of modern farming techniques. He restructured the civil service, promoted industrial development, and introduced the Basic Democracies system as an alternative governance model. However, his tenure was also marked by authoritarian practices, restrictions on political freedoms, and the suppression of opposition movements. His foreign policy was characterized by close ties with the United States and a pragmatic approach to the Kashmir dispute. Ayub's legacy remains contested: while some credit him with modernization and institutional development, others criticize his authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic norms. His presidency established patterns of military intervention in Pakistani politics that would persist for decades. Ayub Khan remains a significant, if controversial, figure in Pakistani history.
