Augustin-Louis Cauchy (August 21, 1789 – May 23, 1857) was a French mathematician renowned for his rigorous and systematic approach to analysis. He lived during a transformative period in mathematics and made fundamental contributions that revolutionized the discipline. Cauchy is credited with establishing the modern foundations of calculus through his rigorous definitions of limits, continuity, and derivatives—work that had previously been treated more intuitively by earlier mathematicians like Newton and Leibniz.
