Arvid Carlsson

Arvid Carlsson (January 25, 1923 – June 29, 2018) was a Swedish neuroscientist and pharmacologist who made groundbreaking discoveries in neurotransmitter research. He is best known for elucidating the role of dopamine as a neurotransmitter in the brain, work that revolutionized the understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders. In 2000, at age 77, Carlsson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, shared with Paul Greengard and Eric Kandel, for his discoveries concerning signal transduction in the nervous system. His research laid the foundation for the development of medications treating Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and depression. Throughout his long career at the University of Göteborg in Sweden, Carlsson published over 500 scientific papers and mentored numerous researchers. His work fundamentally transformed psychiatric and neurological medicine, enabling the development of more effective treatments for conditions affecting millions worldwide. Carlsson remained active in research and public engagement throughout his life, advocating for continued investigation into brain chemistry and its therapeutic applications.
