Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez

Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez (born January 29, 1942) is a Cuban cosmonaut and pilot who made history as the first person of African descent to travel to space. Born in Havana, Cuba, he joined the Cuban military and was selected for the Soviet space program as part of the Interkosmos program, a collaboration between the Soviet Union and allied nations. On September 18, 1980, Méndez launched aboard Soyuz 38 to the Salyut 6 space station, where he conducted experiments in materials science, earth observation, and biology during his eight-day mission. His historic spaceflight was a significant milestone in space exploration history and demonstrated the Soviet Union's commitment to international cooperation in space. Méndez returned safely to Earth and became a celebrated figure in Cuba and internationally, representing both Cuban achievements in space exploration and broader representation in the space program. He later became involved in space program management and remains an important symbol of space exploration's global significance.
