Ariel Castro

Ariel Castro (July 10, 1963 – September 3, 2013) was an American criminal responsible for the kidnapping and imprisonment of three women—Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus—in Cleveland, Ohio. Between 2002 and 2013, Castro held the women captive in his house through coercion, abuse, and psychological manipulation, one of the most shocking and traumatic criminal cases to emerge in contemporary America. The case gained international attention when the victims escaped on May 6, 2013, leading to Castro's immediate arrest. The rescue of the women and discovery of Castro's crimes generated worldwide media coverage and public sympathy for the victims. Castro was convicted on 937 criminal charges including kidnapping, rape, and assault. In 2013, he was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 1,000 years without parole. Shortly after beginning his sentence, Castro died by suicide in his prison cell on September 3, 2013.
